Client: University of Waterloo (Course Assignment) - 2023 - My Role: Project Manager, Researcher, Business Strategy
Due to the recent rise of AI computing and the Internet of Things, (IoT) home appliances have more features and capabilities than ever before. These new features can provide huge quality of life improvements for buyers, but simultaneously increase the complexity of ownership. You’ve got a fridge that’s too cold, a dishwasher that doesn't drain, and a washing machine that you could never quite figure out.
Enter Appliance Ally, the digital application I helped create to remove one bitter dish from homeowners already crowded plates. As the inventor, project manager, researcher, and strategy lead, I was was integral to the development of our digital prototype. My mission? To design a platform that’s so intuitive, even your grandma could use it to optimize her toaster.
Homeowners were drowning in a sea of broken or improperly functioning appliances, manuals, confusing settings, and energy bills that looked like phone numbers. The problem? Fragmented information, zero customization, and a general lack of control. People were crying out for a solution that could bring order to their appliance chaos.
Key Challenges:
I wasn’t just the designer—I was the Sherlock Holmes of appliance woes, the Picasso of pixels, and the Gordon Ramsay of business strategy (minus the yelling). Here’s what I did:
1. Research and Discovery
I kicked things off by talking to real people about their appliance struggles. Turns out, everyone has a story about a rogue dishwasher or a freezer that froze their ice cream into a brick. Key insights:
2. Ideation and Wireframing
Armed with insights, I created user personas (shoutout to“Overwhelmed Olivia” and “Tech-Savvy Tim”) and mapped out their journeys. Then,I sketched low-fidelity wireframes that outlined the platform’s key features:
3. Prototyping and Testing
I designed high-fidelity prototypes in Figma and tested themwith real users. Feedback was gold: users loved the idea but wanted clearer navigation and better energy usage visuals. I iterated faster than a caffeinated coder, refining the design until it was as intuitive as swiping right on Tinder.
4. Visual Design and Branding
I gave Appliance Ally a fresh, modern look with calming blues and greens (because appliance stress is real). I added icons and illustrations to make the interface feel friendly and approachable—like a tech-savvy friend who actually knows how to fix things.
Appliance Ally is the ultimate wingman for your appliances. Here’s what it offers:

The launch of Appliance Ally was a game-changer:
Appliance Ally didn’t just solve problems—it made appliance management fun (yes, fun). This project taught me the power of user-centered design, the importance of iteration, and the joy of seeing people geek out over their smart fridges.
